Sadly, the legal profession is becoming less diverse. According to Columbia University, law school enrollment statistics show that Black and Mexican-American law school enrollment is down by more than 8.5% over the last fifteen years. (See also this article from law.com.)
The ABA House of Delegates has just approved a measure to link ABA accreditation to bar exam pass rates. This means a less diverse law school student body.
The US Department of Education threatened to take away the ABA’s authority to accredit law schools, if the ABA failed to link law school accreditation to bar exam pass statistics.
As recently as 2003, the US Supreme Court ruled that there is a compelling interest in maintaining a diverse law school student body. The case was Grutter v. Bollinger, 539 U.S. 306.
