The election season is becoming more ridiculous. In Washington State, the Republican Party chair called a halt to the vote counting when McCain had a 242 vote lead – with 13% of the votes waiting to be counted! You don’t need to fool around with voting machines when one man has the authority to fix the election. You don’t need to worry much about transparency when this one man with authority acts in public view.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, tens of thousands of votes will be thrown away due to a technicality. The local authorities are declaring victory because they’re not going to be throwing out as many votes as some had predicted.
Representative Rush Holt has another election reform bill in the hopper, H.R. 5036. Although this bill does represent a step in the right direction, the fact that it allows votes to be counted in secret, on unreliable machines running secret software, makes it bad for election integrity.
